The students began their first “Money Works Programme” lesson yesterday, at the Autism’s Studio Blue premises in Nikao.
“It’s exciting,” said ACI programme manager Kat Jensen. “We wanted to incorporate a financial literacy programme, and we’ve called it a “Money Works Programme” to teach them all about the value of money and the importance of spending, saving, giving and basically teaching them about money.”
Raewyn Papu from Aotearoa New Zealand is leading the term one transition programme, from February 19 – April 9, from 3.3pm – 4.30pm on Wednesdays, assisted by volunteers Craig Murray and Garrett Glynn.
For Term 1, Autism Cook Islands will be taking a break from the Lego/Vex robotics course.
The six-week swimming programme at a cost of $30 per person will start next week on Monday, February 24 to March 31, at the Social Centre in Nikao from 3.30pm-4pm.
Cook Islands Aquatics Federation facilitators, husband and wife team Kieran and Leslie Chan, will lead the swim sessions assisted by volunteers Pete Jones and Craig Murray.
Autism’s Studio Blue “Summer Sling Pancake Café” also offers transition students training in hospitality as they start their journey towards independence.
Jensen said: “We want to offer our highly intelligent kids something more.”
On Saturday, the café had a successful soft opening.
“Our customers loved being served by the kids,” said Jensen.
Café manager Jayme Tangatakino says they offer a delicious pancake breakfast menu for customers while autism students can learn about food service, customer interaction and teamwork.
The Summer Sling Pancake Café is open to the public on Fridays from 8am – 1.30pm, and on Saturdays from 9.30am – 1.30pm.
The students will be paid per hour while they are working in the café.
Customers are reminded that we accept cash payments only.
“We would really appreciate your support in coming along and enjoying our menu and being served by our transition students hospitality service staff,” Jensen said.
Autism Cook Islands is collaborating with Nukutere College to have access to their students for training sessions as well.
April is Autism Awareness Month. Jensen said in due course details will be released about the annual Blue Day event and several activities.
