Prime Minister Mark Brown has emphasised the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening community policing following a recent attempted burglary in Avarua.

Speaking to Cook Islands News after a meeting with the acting Police Commissioner, Brown, who is also the Minister for Police, addressed the importance of increasing police presence in the community.

“I had a good meeting with the police commissioner. A couple of police have already volunteered to take on roles in the Ngatangiia community, and we are working to expand this initiative to Arorangi,” he said.

Brown explained that one community constable is currently on sick leave, but plans are underway to appoint others, focusing on boosting local engagement with businesses and residents.

He also reiterated the importance of community policing to enhance safety, particularly during the busy holiday season.

Brown explained that, for Christmas and New Year, the police force will be split into two shifts to ensure there is always a full squad on duty while allowing officers time with their families.

He also stressed on the potential for increased police visibility during the festive period, including measures like checkpoints to combat speeding and drunk driving.

The Prime Minister’s comments came on the heels of a distressing incident on Wednesday, when an attempted break-in was reported at a business in Avarua.

Brent Fisher, the owner of the business targeted, recalled the details of the unsuccessful burglary.

“I came to work and someone tried to get in,” he said, describing the frustration of the first such incident at his location.

Fisher said the intruder had attempted to force open the side door of the building.

“It was pretty silly really, as it was well-lit and there’s another door after that one to get through. Then there’s the alarm and, of course, the security cameras. We’ve got some nice footage which the police now have,” he added.

Fisher also revealed that the intruder had tried to break into other shops in the area with similar lack of success.

“Just a warning to any would-be break-in artists,” he said, referencing his background as an electrician. “I work with 240v and love making security traps, so you’d be taking your life in your hands if you actually got on.”

Meanwhile, PM Brown reiterated the need for continued development of community policing initiatives, particularly in light of the challenges posed during the holiday season.

“I’m hoping that the commissioner will be able to start pushing this out in the next week or so before Christmas,” said Brown.
