Lyon was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, 19 months ago.
Despite an initial prognosis that gave him only three weeks to live, he has shown remarkable resilience and determination to fight the disease for his wife, three children and loved ones.
His family launched a GoFundMe campaign on Monday to raise $126,000 for a newly approved treatment called histotripsy in the U.S., which has shown promising results in treating similar conditions.
As of yesterday afternoon, 102 generous donors had contributed just over $20,000.
Lyon's treatment journey has already taken him from the Cook Islands to New Zealand and Australia, with significant medical expenses, travel costs and no guaranteed cure.
The histotripsy treatment offers a crucial chance to target the tumours and extend his time with his family.
In addition to the online campaign, the community is organising a fitness fundraiser event—Cardio Combat—next Saturday, March 15 at 6:30am at the Tupapa Centre.
All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting Lyon's treatment and associated costs.
Lyon’s family expressed their deep gratitude for the support received so far and remain hopeful that with continued generosity and fundraising efforts, they can reach the goal needed to give him the best chance of recovery.
For those who wish to contribute, donations can be made through the Give a Little (GoFundMe) page, while locals are encouraged to join the fitness class fundraiser.
