The Airport Authority is offering the opportunity for the community to walk on the international runway next Tuesday, January 28, a symbol of the country’s connection to the world.
Airport security manager, Tukua Tangaroa, said the runway would be cleared from 5.30pm – 7pm for the celebration runway walk experience. No cycling is permitted.
In a historic first in January 2024, close to 4000 people walked and cycled the 2.3-kilometre airport runway to celebrate the airport’s 50th anniversary of operations.
On Monday, January 27, celebrations will kick start with drums and a string band to welcoming morning and afternoon passengers with a traditional island style turou, until Friday.
On Wednesday, January 29, which is also the airport’s official birthday, there will be a market day with food and crafts in the carpark. Everyone is welcome. No fees are required to set up a stall, however, vendors must provide their own tents, tables, etc.
“Join us as we celebrate our nation’s 60th anniversary with pride, reflection and unity as we honour our past and look forward to a brighter future,” said Tangaroa.
