Although the Tuteru’s were not injured in the blaze, family members say the fire has deeply affected the couple.
The destruction of the fire also devasted the close knit community of Oire Nikao who are supporting a fundraising event today at the Constitution Park in town to assist the Tuteru’s.
“Mama Kafo and Papa Pae would give their last dollar to anyone, they have always been so giving in the community,” said George Williamson.
“They have always been involved in the community, in the church, sports, Girl Guides and any event, which is why the village wants to do this fundraiser.
“For this to happen to the two of the most loving and generous people around, is devastating.”
The fundraiser is being driven by the Nikao CICC Ekalesia - Rev Nanai Teava, Minister Vaine “Mac” Mokoroa, and coordinated by Bruce Manuela and Daryl Rairi.
For those healthier people out there and those on a strict meal plan, there will be plenty of healthy options at breakfast will be served this morning from 8am by the Tongan Community and Cook Islands Red Cross.
