The driver of a truck that collided with a bridge at Tupapa and entered the stream early yesterday morning is lucky to have escaped more serious injury, police said in a statement.

The driver was trapped in the truck and had to be carefully manoeuvred out of the cab.

The first responder arrived at the scene shortly after 4am. Police motorcyclist senior constable Tehapai Marsters said he was concerned about the risk due to the odour of leaking fuel and a potentially sparking battery.

“The driver was exited with the help of bystanders, who willingly took swift action alongside Police. The scene was secured and attended to by ambulance staff and the Rescue Fire Service.”

Later yesterday morning, a work team from To Tatou Vai (TTV) was repairing damaged water pipe.

“The crash has disrupted the relatively good road record thus far,” police said.

Other road incidents this festive season have involved two confiscated noisy motorbikes and six people forbidden from driving.

On Christmas Day, Police responded to a report of an overnight break-in at a business property in Panama. Early yesterday morning, the Fire Service, assisted by volunteers from the Teimurimotia Fire Service, attended a bush fire in Takuvaine.

“Police are encouraging everyone to continue to stay safe on the road, and around the beaches. If enjoying the lagoon, be watchful of the young ones and stay alert around your valuables and property.

“Enjoy the warm weather and go easy on the drinks! Remember to assign someone as a sober driver if needed. And please don’t let anyone on the bike if they’ve had too much.

“Police are maintaining a good presence around the island this season but stay vigilant about your neighbourhood and the welfare of others.”
