By election date set for vacant councillor seats
Cook Islands Chief electoral officer Taggy Tangimetua.

A vacancy exists for a council member for the village of Ivirua in Mangaia, and two council members for the village of Tetautua in Penrhyn.

Chief electoral officer Taggy Tangimetua has announced that the by elections on these islands will be held on Wednesday, October 23.

The two Ivirua councillor candidates Upokoongo Tairea and Pirimetua Uakino both received 19 votes each in the Island Government Elections held on August 15.

In Tetautua, the two councillor candidates Teika Faira and Warland Koro Solo both received nine votes each.

Nominations of candidates who wish to stand as a councillor in these constituencies will close at noon on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 and shall be lodged with the executive officers on Penrhyn and Mangaia or with the chief electoral officer on Rarotonga.

The main roll will close at 4pm next Tuesday, October 1. The supplementary roll will close at 4pm Tuesday, October 8. Objections to the main and supplementary roll may only be made within seven days after the roll is made public.

Applications for leave to vote in advance shall be made to the returning officer of the constituency not earlier than three working days after nomination day and not later than the day immediately preceding polling day. No postal voting is allowed in the Island Government elections.

Meanwhile, the Northern Group’s successful candidates duly elected as members of the 2024 Island Government are as follows:

Manihiki: Mayor - Joseph Hiro, Tauhunu Councillors (3) -  John Eric McLeod, Wireless Pupuke and Daniel Tutere; Tukao Councillors (3) – Lames Kareroa, Pepe Makira, Trainee Samson.

Penrhyn: Mayor - Rangitava Taia, Omoka Councillors (3)  Tauivananga Niukore, Teheva Teanini Viniki, Chris Papa Beer, Benlenna William.

Pukapuka-Nassau: Mayor - Levi Walewaoa (uncontested), Ngake Councillor (2) - Tokumanako Amosa, Inuvai Iti Ngarupe; Yato Councillor (2) - Tapaanga Mataora (uncontested), Tinokura Tutau (uncontested); Roto Councillors (2) - Teiho-Arii Terepanu Teiho-Tua and Teotau Teopenga.

Rakahanga: Mayor - Taunga Tuteru (uncontested); Purapoto Councillor - Taunga Temu Hagai (uncontested), Niteiri Councillor - Apolonari Piho (uncontested); Numahanga Councillor - Tokamokoha Tupou, Teruakiore Councillor - Tuatangi Aratangi, Matara Councillor - Hagai Noa Teanini.
