This structure will feature a welcoming restaurant and bakery on the ground floor providing customers an assortment of delicious food options, and the contemporary island fashion brand, “Annie Wigmore Creations”.
The upper level will offer versatile commercial spaces available to rent.
With its strategic location next to the busy CITC KAPS store and the popular Vili’s Burger Joint, the building promises to become a centre of activity, encouraging economic growth and enhancing the overall charm of Matavera.
Te Waka is owned by Ngatangiia Member of Parliament Tukaka Ama and his designer wife, Annie (nee Wigmore) Ama.
The couple has been tirelessly working out plans for Annie’s “pet project” for the past two years.
“I’ve always wanted to have my own store and to expand my clothing line,” said Annie, who launched her own island fashion label “Annie Wigmore Creations” a year ago.
“We’re excited, our kids are excited, and we’re looking forward to its completion and having the retailers operating,” she added.
“Vili’s is one of the most popular places to eat on the island, and we’re happy he’s keen to expand, and there will also be decking upstairs for diners.”
Te Waka is built by Raro Weld, with some work done by T&M Heather. It measures 20 metres long and 10 metres wide and is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
Tukaka said they had decided to go with local contractors rather than source pre-cut material from overseas.
“We felt it would be a good idea to keep the money here and support our economy, and our contractors been very good to us,” he said.
“I’m excited for her (Annie), this is her project.
“Rekareka maua, ngakau parau maua, we want to support the community and this spot has been like a central hub in the village, and there is good parking space available next door.”
The Amas would like to thank the Bank of the Cook Islands (BCI), Raro Weld, T&M Heather, the landowners, family members and community for their support.
