Celebrating the richness of people and culture, the Airport Authority Cook Islands will today host a special Kia Orana Day as part of their 50th anniversary celebration on Monday.

Ladies are invited to wear or borrow their best ei katu and elegant island dress for the chance to win cash prizes at the Airport Market Day, which starts at 9am and closes at 1pm.

Gentlemen can also join the competition by wearing their best pareu shirts. The best dressed will win a prize.

Parking at the airport is free.

Each best-dressed category (ei katu, pareu shirt, and island dress) will receive a $200 cash prize.

A designated area with a special backdrop will be set up for participants to have their photos taken by a photographer.

Yesterday’s Airport Market International Day featured a cultural performance by Indonesians and their friends on the island.

Widira Febriyani’s Indonesian spring rolls and meals were a hit in the morning.

Trade for the 24 vendors seemed to be moving along well, considering the new market venue and event.

Nanave Goodwin sells specially designed hand crafted rito earrings and hats at her “Nanave” booth.

“I sold a lot on the first day and I’m trying to keep up with orders,” she said.

Larry Tumii and Nana Buckley are tucked in near the corner, selling striking handmade shell jewellery and bright coloured pareu.

“It has been good, people have been coming to see what’s here and buying, market days are interesting,” said Tumii.

Maruoi, a natural skincare and cosmetic brand owned by Flora Pupuke-Robati, received good foot traffic.

Pupuke-Robati said: “It’s been great, our buyers are locals and tourists – the same at the Punanga Nui Market.”

“The venue is great and it would be good to do it again, like quarterly each year.”
