The old asbestos roofing at the Tupapa Primary Care and Outpatient Clinic has been fully removed, and its new roof has been installed.

The project is progressing better than originally scheduled, says a Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) spokesperson.

“Internal works are currently being undertaken and we expect to start removing the shrink wrap and scaffolding this week, through to next week.”

CIIC conducts weekly asbestos samples and air testing is sent to Aotearoa New Zealand. They are awaiting the latest results within the next few days.

All tests conducted to date measure asbestos levels within a safe range, the spokesperson said.

Last week, the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted a site visit and provided positive preliminary feedback.

A formal report is yet to be received by CIIC, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added the current cost estimate of $400,000 “is in line with the project budget”.

According to CIIC, this project not only focuses on asbestos removal but also includes building enhancements to support and improve public health and dental services for the community’s benefit.

CIIC has received consent from the National Environment Service (NES) for the storage of asbestos materials in shipping containers, which will be locked, contained, and secured until an agreed disposal method is confirmed. The containers will be stored behind the CIIC offices.

The scheduled project duration is from May to August, 2024.

Testing for clearance will be carried out before re-entry into the building post-roof replacement.

Due to the asbestos removal project, the healthcare services were relocated to Te Kou Ward at Rarotonga Hospital on Monday, May 13, 2024.

The oral health services team have moved to the community health and school dental clinics. Adults can be seen at the Avarua School Dental Clinic, Matavera Puna Clinic, Titikaveka Puna Clinic and Arorangi School Dental Clinic.
