A New Zealand visitor who arrived into the Cook Islands this week has tested positive for Covid-19 early today.

The person deemed “highly infectious” was one of the 80 who took the test this morning.

The drive through testing was activated on Saturday after a person who was in Rarotonga earlier this week, was tested positive for Omicron in New Zealand.

However, the first positive case in Cook Islands is not related to this case in NZ.

The person who tested positive at the drive through testing station at Tupapa Public Health Building today had a family member in NZ tested positive for Omicron yesterday. The person being a close contact was required to provide a test this morning which returned positive.

The positive case is staying at a private holiday home in Rarotonga.

A drive through testing station will be set up at the Taua Terevete Park (formerly Constitution Park) tomorrow to carry out more tests.
