Latter Day Saints church member Luduina Williams, who dished out the complimentary meals at the Bank of the Cook Islands (BCI) marquee in town, said the month of December is known as “Light of the World” and is focused on sharing kindness, just like Jesus did.
“There are people out there who are not so fortunate, so this is our way of giving free food service. Some women go out and do washing for others and some tend to peoples’ gardens,” said Williams.
Peka George started the sharing of food programme with the help of BCI. He later left the island, but church members have continued the tradition of cooking and serving food, said Williams.
BCI staff also handed out free Christmas presents of children’s books, which was popular with shoppers in town.
