Pride Cook Islands is proud to announce their partnership with Te Tiare Association in presenting the LGBTQIA+ Anuanua Week – a vibrant celebration of love, acceptance, and unity in the Cook Islands.

This week-long event, spanning from April 12 – 20, 2024, will commemorate the first anniversary of the Cook Islands decriminalising same-sex relations, and serve as a testament to progress, inclusivity, and celebration within the community.

Anuanua represents a time of joy, reflection, and empowerment for the Cook Islands LGBTQI+ community and its allies.

Everyone is invited to join in the festivities and contribute to the spirit of love, acceptance, and unity that defines Anuanua Week.

Throughout Anuanua Week, attendees can look forward to an exciting lineup of events and activities that highlight the diversity and vibrancy of the Pasifika Anuanua community.

From multi-media art displays and a locally produced theatre play, to an Anuanua film day and powerful panel discussions, the event will have something for everyone to enjoy and engage in.

“Together, we hope to make Anuanua Week a celebration that truly reflects the values of acceptance, diversity, and aroa that define the Cook Islands.”

Dean Kapi-Tangata, the newly-elected president of Pride Cook Islands, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of celebrating progress and unity within the Cook Islands.

“We are looking forward to welcoming to our shore’s academics, equity ambassadors, allies and members of our rainbow community who will be joining us in this celebration. And why not – the Cook Islands continues to pave the way for human rights,” said Kapi-Tangata.

Ex-presidents of Te Tiare Association, Valery Wichman, and Pride Cook Islands, Karla Eggelton, both continue to play supporting roles in the delivery of Anuanua Week.

“The support from our sponsors has been incredible, and as each day goes by we see more and more support extended to Anuanua Festival week,” said Eggelton.

As chief advisor for Te Tiare, Wichman said: “I am encouraged by the collaboration with our onshore and offshore partners in this space and I expect meaningful dialogue for next steps to come out of this.”

Key events include a brilliant display of Anuanua inspired art across multiple mediums that will be launched on the Anuanua opening night – “Art Installation & Wearable Art Competition” – on Friday, April 12, at the Bergman Gallery from 6pm-8.30pm.

Colours of the rainbow will feature in the wearable art competition as talented artists and models bring their creative flair to the catwalk.

On Sunday, April 14, the Cook Islands Pride Day Blessing and Luncheon event will be held, starting with a 10am church service at the Apostolic Church in Tupapa followed by a 12-noon buffet luncheon that will be held at Club Raro with entertainment. Ticket to the luncheon is $55 per person.

On Monday, April 15, the “Kai Vananga – Hard Talks” panel discussions will facilitate evocative dialogue and explore relevant themes through personal experiences, professional insights, and technical expertise.

Anuanua Film Day will be held on Tuesday, April 16. The film day aims to further showcase a diverse range of stories and voices, providing a space for reflection, and celebration.

On Wednesday, April 17, Cook Islands award winning playwright Teherenui Koteka will screen her “Pane Provocations” drama production at the Empire Theatre.

On Friday, April 19, the Miss Thunderhips Dance Competition – a night of Cook Islands drums, music and celebration – will be showcased at Te Are Karioi (National Auditorium Domes).

The New Zealand High Commission has announced its enthusiastic support for the upcoming Anuanua Week, including the Miss Thunder Hips event, through Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s new Equity and Inclusion Enabling Fund.

On Saturday, April 20, the local Coco House Bros, featuring guest appearances by Dick Johnson and Anuanua artists in the “Anuanua Music Gay Out’, will be held at Vaiana’s Bistro & Bar from 1pm-10pm.
