The former Wellesley Hotel accommodation in Tutakimoa has been rebranded as Sands of Rarotonga, offering a more welcoming experience with new perks like free airport transfers and relaxed pool access for Lazy Trout diners, aiming to attract both tourists and locals.

The new owners and management promise a more welcoming and flexible experience for both tourists and local guests.

The change follows Wellesley’s exit during the pandemic, ending over a decade of operation.

The Lazy Trout, which opened in 2016 as part of the global Wellesley Hotels and Resorts chain, has retained its popular menu, focusing on fresh seafood and local produce.

The accommodation, now rebranded as Sands of Rarotonga, offers new perks such as complimentary airport transfers, free Wi-Fi and breakfast.

Raj Deo, manager of the Sands of Rarotonga, said, “The beauty about our accommodation is we do free shuttle, pickup and drop off to the airport as well. For the people who stay with us, we do pickup and drop off, and they get a complimentary breakfast, free Wi-Fi.”

A significant change under the new ownership is the relaxation of rules around the pool, which is reportedly the longest on the island.

Previously, only guests staying at the accommodation could use the pool. Now, anyone dining at the Lazy Trout is welcome to take a dip, making it a local-friendly spot for breakfast, lunch and a swim.

“Before, people were not allowed to take a dip in the pool if you did dine before. But under these owners, if you’re coming for breakfast, lunch, you guys can take a dip in the pool,” Deo said.

“We don’t provide towels and stuff, but we have outside showers. You can swim, eat and you can stay peacefully on our premises.”

The revamped space has a new building under the mango tree, with plans to move the bar to the edge of the pool.

The restaurant currently serves breakfast and lunch from 8am to 2pm, Wednesday to Sunday, but once the bar is ready, the Lazy Trout will expand to dinner service.

An official grand opening is expected when the dinner service launches, with a full offering of breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Events such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and team bonding sessions are also welcomed at the venue.

The Sands of Rarotonga’s flexible approach and emphasis on local customers is a significant shift from the past, aiming to create a space where both locals and visitors can relax and enjoy the facilities.
