The summit attended by Pupuke-Robati and other female entrepreneurs at The Edgewater Resort and Spa addressed online challenges they face, such as online portals and payments. Burnout was also identified as a major issue for business owners.
Pupuke-Robati, owner of a small natural skincare and cosmetics business called “Maruoi”, says juggling her full-time job on another island and running her business is challenging.
However, she’s optimistic that women in business can access various opportunities if they put their mind to it.
“It’s been great and in this line of business doing skincare and cosmetic sees endless opportunities so it’s been great and overwhelming. It’s a stepping stone into learning avenues of how to best handle a small business, time management and just all factors and you’re working for yourself so I don’t mind working long hours like versus the 9-5 job,” explains Pupuke-Robati.
“The more I dedicate myself and more into giving more time to my business is worth it in the end.”
Living with two children while the other two are overseas, and juggling daily expenses and home bills, her business is a significant help financially.
“It’s definitely a big help at home with the kids and any other things I need to replenish within the business,” shares Pupuke-Robati.
“I’m just glad I don’t have overheads at the moment, just being able to utilise other small businesses out there who would happily stock my products so that has been a help for me.”
Pupuke-Robati is from Avatiu but works full-time in administration at Pa’s Store on Mitiaro.
She attends to her business after working hours.
“I work for Pa’s Store in Mitiaro, outer island, I do administration works and, in the evenings, I do my business as part time.”
She started her small business about two years ago after the Covid-19 pandemic. Her products initially sold slowly through word of mouth but have picked up this year as she expanded her product range.
The business inspiration came from her personal struggles with skincare. She began experimenting with home remedies using household products and developed an interest in cosmetics and the benefits of natural ingredients.
“It’s been a learning journey from there. I went on to doing online short courses and studies,” she said.
Pupuke-Robati primarily sells her products through Facebook. She plans to launch her Instagram and website soon to expand her customers.
She also sells her products at the Punanga Nui Market on Saturdays and supplies two stockists, Paula’s Gift Shop in Tutakimoa and Miri Miri Spa and Beauty in Ngatangiia.
