A total of 25 students, including 14 girls and 11 boys, were inducted as the 2025 prefects for Apii Avarua yesterday.

Held at the school, and taking a break from its normal academic routines for the occasion, parents and loved ones gathered for this momentous celebration.

Apii Avarua principal Engia Baxter emphasised that this is not just about the students stepping up to become leaders but also inspiring the younger ones to lead with integrity.

“It’s always been the same expectation of the children to read, to be good leaders, to be strong in what they do, to be smart in what they do, and to be supportive of all the school initiatives,” Baxter told Cook Islands News.

“Their behaviour is important, that they (prefects) behave correctly and do not think that they are teachers, but they are teacher supporters that we can depend on when times are busy or to carry out roles around the school that supports the well-being of the school.”

Ngaupoko Tatuava was inducted the head girl, and Williams Tou the head boy of the school.

In her speech, Tatuava acknowledged the gathering especially the staff and their families, stressing that the role is a guidance towards greater things in their young lives.

“It is both an honour and privilege to express my deepest gratitude to our principal and teachers for entrusting us with this responsibility,” she said.

“Your guidance, wisdom and unwavering support have shaped us into the individuals we are today. Through your dedication, you have instilled in us, not only knowledge but also the values of integrity, responsibility and perseverance – quality that are essential in leadership.”

Tatuava told her fellow prefects that this role is not just a title but a commitment to serve, to inspire and lead by example.

“Leadership is not about power or authority – it is about influence, service and the ability to make a positive impact,” she added.

“As we step into this leadership journey, may God be the forefront of all that we do. May He grant us wisdom to make the right choice, strength and to carry our duties, and compassion to serve others wholeheartedly.”
