Brown, in congratulating US elected President Donald Trump said: “We are optimistic that under President Trump’s leadership, our partnership will continue to strengthen, benefiting both our people and our shared interests in the Pacific and beyond.”
In September, last year, diplomatic relations between the US and Cooks were formed when Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and PM Brown signed a joint statement commemorating the establishment of diplomatic relations stating that the historic step reaffirms their joint commitment to deepen their cooperation as equal and sovereign partners, guided by respect, genuine engagement, and partnership.
According to a statement released by the US Government last year, the establishment of diplomatic relations is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation on shared priorities including the climate crisis, ocean stewardship, marine resources, renewable energy, education, sustainable development, democracy, human rights, and good governance.
With this both countries are to also continue to work closely together in Pacific regional institutions, including the Pacific Islands Forum and the Pacific Community, and bolster connections within the Pacific region.
Yesterday, PM Brown said: “On behalf of the Government and people of the Cook Islands, I extend my warm congratulations to President Donald J. Trump on his election victory. “The Cook Islands look forward to fostering the relationship between our two countries based on the signing of formal diplomatic relations last year. Congratulations once again to President Trump, and we wish him every success in his term ahead.”
