With the festive season underway, ANZ Cook Islands is reminding customers in the Pacific to be vigilant against scammers who take advantage of this busy time of year.

ANZ Cook Islands Country Head Jason Murray says these periods are prime opportunities for scammers to target everything from parcel deliveries to holiday bookings.

"Scammers often exploit busy periods like Christmas and New Year, hoping to take advantage of individuals who are preoccupied at this time of year. We encourage customers to trust their instincts before giving out their details, clicking on unknown links, or making any online purchases.

"It's crucial to stay informed about the latest scam tactics. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and awareness is our best defense," added Mr Murray.

"We advise customers to regularly monitor their bank statements or banking apps and report any suspicious activity immediately. Quick action can prevent potential losses," says Mr Murray.

"Remember, ANZ will never ask for your personal information via email or text message. If something feels off, it probably is," warned Mr Murray.

Top tips to keep yourself safe

These tips could save you from a scam this summer and help protect yourself and your money during the festive season.

Trust your instincts

Hang up if a caller asks you to take urgent action, or delete the message, if something feels off. Don't feel pressured to comply - your safety comes first.

Be skeptical of links

Check the legitimacy of any texts or emails and be skeptical about clicking on links, especially if they come from unknown or unexpected sources. Ask a trusted family member or friend if you're not sure or call the company on its publicly listed number to check if it's real.

Check phone numbers

Be wary of receiving an email or text with a call back number, as scammers pretend to be from legitimate organisations. Contact the organisation on their publicly listed phone number to see if it's a genuine communication.

Secure online shopping

When shopping for gifts online, be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, as they often are. Always check the URL starts with https://not http://and that there's a locked padlock icon in the web address bar, this tells you the site is secure.

Keep track of your account

Review your account activity regularly to make sure you made every transaction.

Stay vigilant with your cards and devices

While travelling during the festive season, keep wallets safe in crowded areas and be mindful of your surroundings when using your card. Don't leave your cards unattended in an unlocked car, on the beach, or in a campervan or tent.

Lock your devices with strong passwords or biometric security to protect your personal information. This helps to prevent someone else logging into your ANZ Internet Banking or the ANZ Pacific App.
