The Cook Islands’ 60th year of self-governance is set to commence in style with Te Ipukarea Concert, to be held tomorrow night at the National Auditorium.

Presented by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Cultural Development, the concert from 5pm to 9pm will mark the start of a new year and the country’s 60th anniversary.

Prime Minister Mark Brown will make a “special announcement” during the event, which will feature food stalls, kids’ fun zone, string bands, drummers, dance teams and live performances by Te Haumaru, Willie Dean and the Boys, Ridge Ponini and more.

Brown is expected to announce the theme of the 60th celebration, which Cook Islands News understands will focus on identity and connection to the land. He is also expected to announce a range of initiatives to commemorate the diamond jubilee.

“What better way to kick off the new year than by coming together under the stars for a night of music, dance, and celebration!” a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said.

“This special event marks the start of a historic year for the Cook Islands, as we proudly celebrate 60 years of self-governance. It’s a time to reflect on our journey, honour our heritage, and look forward to the future with unity and joy.

“With an incredible lineup of performances showcasing the vibrant soul of our culture, this will be a night filled with energy, pride, and joy.”

Prime Minister Brown shared his excitement for the event, saying: “This concert is a chance for us to start the year as we mean to go on – together, proud, and full of life.”

“It’s a celebration of who we are as Cook Islanders and an opportunity to share our joy with the world. I can’t wait to see everyone there!”
