Cook Islands Police say the long weekend was low-key with few reported incidents.

Police media and strategic advisor Trevor Pitt said that on Ariki Day on Friday, a tourist was reported to be stranded in Avana, on Motu Tapu.

Pitt said police were told the male visitor had ventured out to the motu during the morning low tide but had become reluctant to return with the subsequent higher tide and stronger current.

A local fisherman helped him return to the jetty.

Minor incidents during Friday included a complaint arising from the Pokoinu water station at 4.50pm when a white pickup hit into the rear side of a car and took off.

On Saturday, two road incidents were reported to Police, involving reckless driving.

The first was called in at 8.37pm when a group of eight motorbikes sped through the Nikao area, and the other was a white car speeding towards town in the vicinity of The Islander Hotel.

Pitt added that police conducted one arrest over the weekend. The man was charged for dangerous driving and refusing a breathalyser test in connection with an earlier incident.
