Police gear up for safe and peaceful Christmas
Police Commissioner T. James Keenan. POLICE MEDIA/23122203

Kia Orana and Christmas greetings to you all!

As the year draws to a close, and the holiday season begins, the Police Service is now into a festive roster that is geared up to keep everyone of us safe and peaceful, during this period of celebration. We have an important job to do this holiday season, and to ensure we do have a merry time with our families, we ask that everyone throughout the community, here on Rarotonga and in the Outer Islands, join us in a spirit of helpfulness cooperation.

As is our tradition each year, we gather the family together here at home where we can share the joy of giving gifts, as well as giving thanks for the blessings we have received throughout the year. It can also be a time of mixed emotions, as many of our families endure the sadness of having lost a loved one in recent days, or perhaps in fond remembrance of an anniversary of those who are no longer with us. As Cook Islanders, we share an extraordinary capacity to come together and heal. To strengthen that bond. And to show each other just how much we appreciate the value of family togetherness.

For the Police Service, we have achieved many positive results, this year. A number of our crime activities, those reported to Police, are showing lower numbers of incidents compared to last year. For example, the data on burglaries and thefts, and domestic violence around the home, are reflecting reduced numbers of cases. These are areas where Police will continue to press forward and secure even better results.

Unfortunately, we have had disappointing outcomes despite our best efforts. Our roads, in particular, continue to be the source of the larger share of our concerns. Road safety is an ongoing priority that is being sustained by poor driver behaviour and attitudes. Motor vehicle crashes this year will exceed last year. Four road fatalities in 2023 and serious injuries are too heavy a toll on such a small community as ours. We all share a responsibility to be more careful, especially in terms of our speed, paying more attention on the road, and not consuming alcohol when driving.

The Police can only do so much and maintain a presence that numbers and resources allow. Our partnerships with you all are therefore vital, and the cooperation we seek is always appreciated, especially when it pays off in keeping people safe and secure.

Let’s all celebrate Christmas with a common sense of safety and a genuine consideration for others. Stay alert to any risks associated with wherever you are enjoying the festivities, and keep a vigilant watch around the beach areas while swimming, and amongst your neighbourhood, which may need the added security of a friend.

Have a Merry Christmas and we shall look forward to a Happy New Year!
