The Cook Islands Police Service has expressed great concerns over the ongoing behaviour of drink driving leading to road incidents following last weekend’s list of incidents.

According to police, more than six alcohol-related incidents were reported since Friday and five of those involved individuals who were said to be intoxicated and causing domestic trouble and disturbing or threatening others. One was a tourist giving concern to his wife in the early hours of Saturday.

Police reported a suspected crash at Matavera involving a damaged speed sign, and on Sunday night a resident reported a suspected drunk driver from the seawall towards town that was on the wrong side of the road without lights.

A crash was also reported to have occurred late Sunday night near Love Cafe at Karekare.

“Police were called at 10.55pm when a white mini truck crashed into a container near the roadside,” police said.

“The 34-year-old female driver was reported to be overtaking other vehicles at the time. She was admitted to hospital after being transported by ambulance and was subject to a blood specimen for analysis.”

A couple of tourists were reported to have been recovered from the lagoon at Avaavaroa on Saturday morning, swimming without a guide.

“Drunken behaviour was a prominent theme drawing the attention of Police throughout the weekend. More than half a dozen alcohol-related incidents were reported since Friday night,” police stated.

In the Pa Enua, a man was arrested Saturday night and detained by Rakahanga Police for 48 hours, following drunk behaviour that led to a domestic violence incident. He was charged with assault on a female.
