Police media and strategic advisor Trevor Pitt last night confirmed that the driver claimed he fell asleep.
“Blood specimen was sought,” Pitt added.
On Monday morning, a crew from Te Aponga Uira (TAU), Rarotonga’s electricity provider, was observed repairing the damaged power pole.
According to a witness who lives near the area, she heard a loud noise from the roadside around 5.30am.
At 6.15am, she saw Te Aponga Uira team clearing the area and fixing a power pole.
A car with visible damages was parked nearby.
