The men who were arrested over the weekend for their drunken behaviour are currently on bail.

Police media and strategic advisor Trevor Pitt said men have been charged for breach of peace after both caused disturbances in a public place.

“Both have been bailed – One was only detained until late next morning for his own care.  The other was charged and bailed Sunday to appear in court on Thursday (drunkenness in public, breach of the peace),” he told Cook Islands News.

The drunken behaviour took place in town early Saturday with both being the cause of disturbances on different occasions, the first after midnight at two nightclubs and the second later in the early hours at RFC in Avarua.

Meanwhile, Pitt also confirmed that there had been no further updates on the weekend vehicle crashes where the drivers fled both scenes on different occasions.

There were two crashes on Saturday morning: in one, a driver absconded from the vehicle, and in the other, the driver fled the scene.

Police found blood stains and a phone at the scene of a suspected crash near the Meteorological Office, but no vehicle or driver was on site. The second was called in at 3.31am when a vehicle crashed near Palm Grove, Titikaveka. The driver fled the scene but a phone, wallet ID was left at the scene, police said.

Police spokesperson Trevor Pitt told Cook Islands News last night: “There was an identifying wallet left behind, but Police have not yet spoken to that person.”

“Another report has since been lodged, which claims that the vehicle was seen earlier Friday evening driving recklessly.  Police are looking into it.”

These recent crashes come after three crashes were reported to police last Thursday night, one involving the ambulance that was on its way to one of the incidents.

The first collision was called in at 9.41pm at Turangi where a motorcyclist had driven into the rear of a car, which had slowed down. The motorcyclist was transported to hospital by ambulance.

Later Thursday night, the hospital reported that a motorcyclist had driven into the ambulance at Nikao while it was en route to the Turangi crash. That motorcyclist sustained minor injuries.

The third incident was reported at 12.43am Friday morning when a motorcyclist crashed at O’oa.

“The driver was taken to hospital for what is a suspected alcohol-related crash,” police said.
