Fatal crash accused  pleads ‘not guilty’

The motorbike driver who is accused of causing a fatal crash on June 10 this year, has pleaded not guilty.

Jonathan Elisa, 25, appeared before Justice of the Peace Georgina Williams at the Criminal Court in Avarua yesterday.

Elisa is charged for excess blood alcohol and dangerous driving causing death.

He is the survivor of the motorbike crash in Titikaveka that resulted in the death of a 24-year-old man.

Defence counsel Norman George said they elected a judge and jury trial.

The trial date is to be advised by the Court Registrar.

The matter has been adjourned to a judge call over on September 1.

Bail conditions continue whereby Elisa is not to consume or purchase alcohol, not to enter any liquor license premises, not to leave the Cook Islands without the approval of the Court and to surrender his passport.

The accused is also ordered to present himself at the Police Headquarters every Friday between 5pm-6pm.
