Nightclub brawl accused told to remain in the Cook Islands

One of eight visitors from Australia allegedly involved in a brawl at a Rarotonga nightclub has been told to remain in the Cook Islands.

Poutapu Maretu, facing charges of injuring with intent and injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and two charges of assaulting Police, appeared before Justice Christine Grice at the High Court in Avarua on Thursday.

He is one of 11 men charged in relation to a fight at Rehab late Wednesday evening, November 8, in which two stabbings were reported, multiple people including Rehab staff received injuries, and Police backup was required to get the situation under control.

Defence lawyer Lavi Rokoika requested suppression around some of the details during the hearing, and the Cook Islands News had the matter recalled to seek clarification.

Justice Grice said the publication could report the matter was adjourned to December 15, with March 8, 2024, being a likely hearing date.

Maretu had entered a plea of not guilty and would continue to be on bail, but not allowed to leave the Cook Islands.
