Man fined, disqualified  after drunk  driving crash

Tepa Tangata O Tongareva Kelly was ordered to pay a fine of $134 after being convicted for excess blood alcohol.

Kelly appeared before Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro on Thursday at the Criminal Court in Avarua and entered a guilty plea.

The court heard that on February 8 this year, around 6pm, he crashed into another motorcycle making a U-turn in Nikao.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Fairoa Tararo said the accused collided with the other motorcycle driver.

He was then transported to the hospital, where a blood analysis was done. The result was 104 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

Senior sergeant Tararo said the accused admitted to consuming two bottles of Steinlager beer.

JP Taoro said this was Kelly’s first traffic offence and further ordered him to pay reparations of $150 for the blood analysis report.

He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and was also ordered to pay $50 court cost.
