‘High risk offender’ remanded in custody

A young woman was remanded in custody after Probation Services informed the court that she was a high risk offender.

Maiarii Kauvai Short, who had spent 48 hours in custody, appeared before Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro yesterday.

The probation officer informed JP Taoro that Short was a high risk to the community and in an unstable condition. They added that she had violated her probationary licence.

The officer requested a one-week adjournment to gather more information about the case and clarify any outstanding issues.

JP Taoro granted the adjournment until April 18 and instructed Probation Services to notify Short’s previous lawyer.

It was earlier reported that in August 2023, Short was spared jail by JP Taoro, JP Vania Kenning, and JP Paul Turepu. She was sentenced to two years of probation for eight charges of contempt, burglary, obtaining credit fraudulently, and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Short had failed to turn up for community service on November 4 last year and had then appeared in the High Court before Justice Christine Grice where Probation had asked that she not be abroad between 7pm and 7am.

Justice Grice inquired whether Short could comply with the curfew conditions, and she agreed.

However, Justice Grice expressed concern that the curfew might set Short up to fail.

Justice Grice then agreed to vary the curfew to the hours between 7pm and 7am and asked probation to look into counselling and assistance for Short.
