Travel Jack Engu appeared in the Criminal Court on Thursday to make an application for bail.
His lawyer Michelle Tangimama said she understood he was charged with serious offences but there were considerations under the Criminal Procedure Act and the Constitution.
Character references were attached to the application from the defendant’s employer stating he had demonstrated exceptional qualities.
A letter from the defendant’s mother stated she blamed herself for not looking after her son.
She had seven children and her son only got into trouble when he mixed with the wrong crowd.
She wanted her son to return home to her.
Tangimama said he earned between $500 and $800 a week and was consistent with his employment.
He had been in custody for a considerable length of time.
She suggested stricter bail conditions if he were to be released.
He would reside with his mother and was not a risk, Tangimama said.
“I am of the view he won’t be reoffending.”
The Crown opposed bail as he had been arrested in June and charged with offences related to a partner, then appeared in court again in November facing charges against a new partner.
He had been given an opportunity to comply with bail but had not done so.
He continued to pose a serious risk to the community if he was released, the court heard.
Justice of the Peace Nadine Newnham said the application was denied and Engu was remanded in custody.
