Solomone Taufahema appeared before Justice of the Peace Vania Kenning in the Criminal Court on Thursday.
JP Kenning asked for an update.
A man who previously identified himself as Taufahema’s brother, was again sitting in the public gallery, when he asked JP Kenning if he could address the court.
He said he had reached out to lawyers, was short on money, and had tried legal aid.
It was not possible, he said.
“As I said last time, I really need help, police would rather have him inside because of our history.
“I’m here to ask again to release him on bail with strict conditions if needed; I really need his help, he has been doing good.”
The man then apologised for his previous appearance in defence of his brother.
“I was all emotional.”
JP Kenning suggested they enquire with court staff about legal aid.
The man said he was aware of the process and how long it takes.
“I went and saw lawyers and they ran the other way; if it is possible in any way to put him on strict bail conditions, I really need his help.”
Police were not opposed to bail, if a 24-hour curfew was in place, and that the defendant reside at the address and not interfere with witnesses.
JP Kenning released Taufahema with a 24-hour curfew, telling him not to interfere with witnesses, and reside at an approved address, before adjourning the matter to February 29.
“Understand, you are being bailed, follow the conditions, one wrong move and we are back to square one.”
The man said Taufahema would be living with him and their father.
