Thirty Fijian national staff of Club Raro Resort in Rarotonga celebrated the independence of their homeland with their Cook Islands colleagues, showcasing Fijian culture, on Thursday.

Resort staff Ben Jnr Drole said they were glad to have celebrated Fiji Day with their friends, remembering their families back home.

The staff prepared umu for the guests and colleagues at the resort and performed some cultural items.

“We gathered not only as Fijians but as a community united in the spirit of friendship, heritage, and pride. Fiji Day is celebrated every year on October 10 to commemorate the signing of the Deed of Cession in 1874,” Drole said.

He said that the momentous event marked the beginning of a 96-year journey toward independence from British rule, and it was on this very day, October 10, in 1970, that Fiji finally became a fully independent nation.

“It is not just a day of remembrance, but also a time for reflection – on our history, on the courage and resilience of our ancestors, and on the progress we’ve made as a proud and free nation.

“This year, the national celebrations held in Levuka, Fiji’s first capital, embraced the theme ‘To Heal and To Hope’, a message that resonates deeply with us all, especially in these times when unity and resilience are more important than ever.
