Children as young as six years old participated in a World Food Day Potiki Makona Kai Sumaringa Sushi workshop at Terevete Park yesterday.

Pictured is six-year-old Coral Fonmanu, who aspires to be a chef, following in the footsteps of her father, Johnny, a chef at Nautilus Resort.

Her mum, Alana Fonmanu, yesterday told Cook Islands News: “Coral had a fun and exciting learning opportunity, learning how to make sushi is a tough job and teaching them this skill early is so awesome.”

“As a parent I’m really stoked to see her in her element, creating and cooking. And now I can sit back and relax while she cooks up a storm!”

Workshop coordinator Terina Karaiti said they held three sessions of the workshop, teaching children how to make sushi. At the end of the workshop, the participants received certificates.

A mapu cooking competition for teenagers saw participants receiving a box of ingredients to make a dish.

Karaiti said the workshop and cooking competition were about getting the young ones to be creative and learn new skills.
