Previously, the annual Mire Atu was restricted to only Cook Islanders residing in the Cook Islands.
This year, for the first time, the invitation has been extended to both established and emerging Cook Islands artists residing overseas in celebration of the nation’s 60th anniversary of self-governance.
Seventeen composers – 16 from Rarotonga, one from Mauke/Akatokamanava –will compete for the first prize of $5000 cash. Over $20,000 worth of cash prizes are up for grabs.
Tauranga Vananga secretary Emile Kairua said this year’s competition promises to be particularly special, as it incorporates an international element, with composers from across the Pacific and beyond contributing to the pool of musical talent.
He said the event brings together a diverse range of genres and performances, creating an exciting and vibrant atmosphere that highlights the depth of musical talent within our community.
“We are excited with the line up.”
The event will be held at Te Are Karioi Nui/National Auditorium at 6.30pm on Friday, March 14.
Special reserved tables will be offered for $25 a seat per person which will give audience the opportunity to purchase food from vendors outside and eat their dinner inside while watching the show.
Light refreshments will also be served.
On the night of the event, outdoor vendors will have delicious meals available to buy. General admission is $10 for adults and $5 per child.
Kairua acknowledged The Edgewater Resort and Spa for hosting Te Pae Tai Nui Mire Atu in previous years.
