The twist, electric slide, and other moves of yesteryear will be dominating the dance floor once again for the latest retro disco with Rarotonga’s Vinyl Revival Club.

Disc jockey Ian Wheeldon will be spinning dance floor hits from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s “in all their crackly glory” at Trader Jacks in Avarua from 8pm to midnight on Saturday.

“Always a fun night,” Wheeldon said.

“Whether you want to strut your stuff on the dance floor or prop up the bar and tap your feet, a good time is guaranteed.”

The Vinyl Revival Club, based out of The Cafe in the Beachcomber building in Avarua, has been hosting discos at multiple locations around Rarotonga since 2015.

“Trader Jacks was one of the first venues to host the retro night and we always enjoy being back there,” Wheeldon said.

Saturday will mark the club’s second outing so far this year, after the Fishing Club in Tupapa served as the venue for the retro disco in March.

The Flying Turtle Cafe in Arorangi and the Lucky Rooster, Trio’s Garden Bar, and Rarotonga RSA in Avarua have also hosted the event.

The last time the retro disco was held at Trader Jacks was July 2021.

Wheeldon and wife Clare kick-started the Cook Islands’ vinyl revival after buying a stack of records from a buy, sell, swap page on social media eight years ago.

Buying a turntable for their home, then another for their business – vinyl enthusiasts began coming out of the woodwork, spurring the Wheeldons to search for more records they could either buy or borrow.

Wanting to share their collection with the island, the club and its retro disco was born.
