Church Talk: Recognising and embracing God’s blessings in our lives
As Christ gave thanks before multiplying the loaves and fishes to feed the multitude, we too can find abundance when we offer gratitude for what we have. LDS25032020

Often, we focus on what we lack – whether it’s confidence, friends, or opportunities – and forget all the blessings God has already given us, writes Kayla Kaimarama-Willie of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

There once was a man whose lifelong dream was to board a cruise ship and sail the Mediterranean Sea. He dreamed of walking the streets of Rome, Athens, and Istanbul. After saving every penny, he had enough for his passage. But since money was tight, he packed a suitcase filled with cans of beans, boxes of crackers, and bags of powdered lemonade, living on these humble foods throughout the journey.

The man would have loved to enjoy the many activities offered on the cruise –working out, swimming in the pool, and attending shows – but he didn’t participate. He envied those who enjoyed the delicious meals and exciting experiences. Yet, he stayed in his cabin and lived on his modest food, thinking he couldn’t afford anything more. When the cruise ended, a crew member asked him which farewell party he would attend. That’s when he learned that nearly everything on board, including the food, entertainment, and activities, had already been included in the price of his ticket. He had been living far beneath his privileges. Story retrieved from Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf's April 2011 address, “Your Potential, Your Privilege”.

This story teaches us valuable lessons. Just like the man, many of us settle for less, thinking we must live on the bare minimum. We may not realise that God has given us everything we need for a fulfilling life. The gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and the peace of Christ are available to us now, but we may not fully embrace them. As Christ gave thanks before multiplying the loaves and fishes to feed the multitude, we too can find abundance when we offer gratitude for what we have. In the act of thanksgiving, even the smallest blessings can become more than enough.

For us, this means recognising the blessings already provided. Often, we focus on what we lack – whether it’s confidence, friends, or opportunities – and forget all the blessings God has already given us. In James 1:17, we are reminded that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above”. God has given us everything we need to grow and become more like Him. Just like the man on the cruise didn’t realise what was included in his ticket, sometimes we fail to see the abundance God has already provided.

The Saviour teaches in John 10:10 that He came to give us life “more abundantly”. This abundant life isn’t just about material things – it’s about the joy, peace, and purpose that come from following Him. Sometimes we may think living the gospel involves limitations, but it opens the door to true happiness and fulfilment. The gospel isn’t just something to follow when convenient; it’s a path that leads to every blessing God has in store for us. Embracing it fully brings peace, joy, and direction.

Another lesson from this story is the importance of experiencing the fullness of life. Just as the man missed out on activities because he didn’t realise they were included, we too can miss blessings if we let fear, pride, or doubt hold us back. We might hesitate to participate in church activities, say our prayers, or scripture study because we don’t fully understand the blessings they offer. But God has provided everything we need to succeed, and when we act with faith, we unlock greater blessings.

As we reflect on this story, let’s ask ourselves: Are we living beneath our privileges? Are we settling for less when God has given us so much more? Brothers and sisters, don’t let fear or insecurity hold you back. Take advantage of the blessings you have now. As we live the gospel, embrace the community of believers, and seek spiritual nourishment, we will see God’s blessings unfold in our lives. I testify that God loves you, He sees your potential, and He wants to help you reach it. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
