Esther was an ordinary young woman who became queen of Persia not by ambition, but by divine design. LDS CHURCH/25020603
In a world where challenges often test our values, I am reminded of the story of Esther from the Bible which offers timeless lessons on courage, faith and standing up for what is right. Though this story is from ancient scripture, the lessons in it remain relevant today. Esther’s example inspires me, and I hope her story encourages you as well.
Esther was an ordinary young woman who became queen of Persia not by ambition, but by divine design. Following the counsel of her cousin Mordecai, she concealed her Jewish identity. When her people were threatened, Esther realised she had a unique opportunity to make a difference.
In our own lives, we often find ourselves in unexpected situations asking, “Why am I here?” Esther’s story reminds us that we might be placed in certain roles or circumstances for a reason. Within our families, communities and workplaces, each of us has the potential to create meaningful change. “…who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14). The opportunities and challenges we encounter often serve a purpose beyond our understanding. While these moments may push us beyond our comfort zones, we can, like Esther, demonstrate unwavering faith and trust that our actions – rooted in faith – can make lasting impact, even when the outcome is uncertain.
Approaching the king without an invitation was risky – it could have cost Esther her life. Yet, she faced this fear with faith, asking her people to fast and pray on her behalf. Despite the risks, she bravely declared, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16). My dear brothers and sisters, courage is not the absence of fear; it is the strength to do what is right, even when faced with fear, trusting in the Lord’s guidance. Esther’s example shows us that faith in God can give us the strength to stand up for what matters most, even when the odds seem against us. We can take comfort in the promise, “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed; for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:9).
Before speaking to the king, Esther did not rush into action. She prepared herself through fasting, prayer and careful reflection. This spiritual preparation provided her the clarity and strength needed to act wisely. In moments of uncertainty, preparation is key. Turning to earnest prayer and reflection can bring us peace, clarity and guidance. Seeking divine inspiration helps us face challenges with greater confidence. As promised in Proverbs 3:5-6, when we trust in the Lord with all our heart, and lean not on our own understanding, and acknowledge Him always throughout our lives, He will direct our paths.
Esther may have felt like just one person, unsure if she could truly make a difference. Yet, her courage and faith saved her people. She used her position and voice to stand up for what was right, no matter the personal risk.
You and I don’t need a title or special status to make an impact. Each of us can be a force for good wherever we are – in our homes, schools, communities and beyond. Small actions, fuelled by courage, can create a lasting impact.
My dear brothers and sisters, whether you are facing challenges, standing up for others, or striving to live your values, trust in God’s plan for you. Your actions may matter more than you realise. Like Esther, let us stand firm in our faith, prepare with trust, and choose courage over fear.
I testify of this, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
