Church talk: Anointed for the marketplace
Rachel Best. 24091910

Initially, I believed church was primarily about Sunday services, singing, sermons, and socialising. However, I later realised that this was a superficial understanding of Jesus and the message of the gospel, writes Rachel Best of The Arepua Gateway Assembly of God Church.

The church is God's vehicle for reaching a lost and broken world.

We are all participants in this ministry of reconciliation, a reflection of the Father’s heart as revealed in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (New International Version)

However, ministry isn't confined to formal church roles and settings. Our homes, workplaces, sports, schools, businesses and the community are marketplaces where we can significantly impact the world around us.

As Christians, God has a unique plan for each of us, equipping us for the specific purpose He has called us to. Romans 8:28 and 11:29 remind us of God's unwavering purpose and grace.

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (New International Version) and Romans 11:29, “for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable (He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call. (Amplified Bible)

Without the Holy Spirit's guidance and intentional intimacy with God, we are swayed by worldly concerns, circumstances, and life’s busy demands, and by default leading us to rely on our own strength and understanding.

Activities and programmes are important, but over focusing on them can lead to neglecting our spiritual needs, missing God’s invitation to participate in His great work. This can lead to burnout, disappointments, hardened hearts, offences, and discouragement.

In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

Jesus used salt and light as metaphors for believers. We are called to be salt and light in the world. Like salt preserving food, we preserve the world from lawlessness. Like light shines in darkness, our influence should point others to Him.

In a world of brokenness, we bring peace, in sorrow, joy! We bestow a crown of beauty instead of ashes. Our presence in the marketplace should be a beacon of hope, reflecting the light of Christ.

Paul the Apostle was a skilled tentmaker who exemplified marketplace ministry in the New Testament. His interactions with people led to many encounters with Jesus and radical conversions. As a vessel for God, he spread the gospel to the Gentiles, witnessing miracles, healings, and divine manifestations. This ministry continues today through the same Spirit.

If you are a Christian in the marketplace, feeling stuck or unsure of your role, pray and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. He will lead you to all truth. Let the Holy Spirit touch the depths of your soul and illuminate areas unsurrendered. Allow His presence to mould and shape your character. In God's perfect timing, He will open doors that no one can close and His plan for your life will prevail.

Never let negative circumstances define your destiny. Engage in prayer, study the Word, and trust Him in all things. Remember, your home and workplace are your marketplace. There is a purpose and destiny awaiting you there.

Take a moment to reflect on how effective you are in your marketplace of ministry. How bright is your light? Or is it under a bowl? Allow God to show you where he’s working and be bold enough to step out in faith. Invest in eternal value, not temporary value.

May this word be an encouragement to your walk with Christ and your continued pursuit of God’s kingdom and righteousness. He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.

God doesn’t give up on people, and neither should we! Rest in knowing that He is Sovereign and Loving over all His creation.

Kia Manuia.
