“Let us use our voices to tell the world, the Pacific is not just a dot on the map, it is a lifeline for millions and it must be protected.” This was Miss Cook Islands Ngatepaeru Marie Maoate’s message at the Miss Pacific Islands 2025 pre-pageant interview in Solomon Islands yesterday.

Maoate, who was the eighth contestant to present at the event, highlighted that as Pacific queens, they have the power to inspire change and stand together to show the world that the Pacific will not sink, “we will rise”.

Maoate, who is representing the country under the Miss Cook Islands Pageant Association (MCIPA), echoed the words of her elders: “Who is destroying our ocean, our waters are rising, the waves are stronger, the winds are devastating, the heavens are temperamental, the darkness has unfolded the tears of our ancestors, we must protect.”

Focusing on the topic of environment and climate change, she shared her thoughts, stating that the Pacific is in danger.

“Climate change is no longer a distant threat. It is here ending and eroding our shores, bleaching our reefs and endangering our way of life.

“As the guardians of the Pacific we must end it now, our small island nations -Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia - are on the front lines of these crises; rising sea levels threaten our homes, extreme weathers devastate our lands, our marine life is suffering but we are not powerless.

“We must lead with courage, the government must enforce stricter environmental policies; banning single use plastics, protecting our reefs, and investing in renewable energy like solar or wind power.

“Our people must embrace suitable practices, reducing waste, supporting eco-friendly businesses and reviving traditional knowledge that teaches us to live in harmony with nature.

“Education is key, we must raise awareness in our schools, communities and on global platforms.”

Crowning for the pageant will be held tomorrow (local time). If she wins this year, she will make history as the ninth woman from the Cook Islands to win the coveted Miss Pacific Islands crown and title, breaking a tie with Samoa for the most victories in the pageant’s history.

The last time Solomon Islands hosted the pageant, Cook Islands won their record-breaking eight crown with Teuira Napa.
