Police seek male in bar assault

Police are hunting a male suspect following an assault in a Tupapa bar last weekend. Officers were called to the incident in which the man assaulted another male, causing facial injuries. The victim was taken to Rarotonga Hospital for treatment and was later discharged. The assailant fled the scene when police arrived. Police say the search is still on for the suspect. The attack was one of only 14 matters police were involved with over the weekend, a far cry from recent weeks in which more than 30 incidents have been reported between Friday night and Sunday morning. Most of the police work has been on the roads around the island. Road safety checkpoints targeting drunk drivers and people driving badly resulted in five drivers having their vehicles removed from them and impounded. They were also forbidden from driving any vehicle for 12 hours. Two male tourists were arrested for driving with excess breath alcohol on Friday night and both appeared before the court on Saturday morning. Also on Friday evening a motor vehicle crash occurred on the main road in front of Rarotonga International Airport entrance area in Nikao. Two motorcycles were involved. A male rider was admitted into hospital for treatment, while a female rider was treated and discharged. Police said alcohol and speed were contributing factors to this crash. An investigation is continuing. Police officers received six callouts requesting assistance to remove people causing problems from private homes, beaches and a hotel resort. All of the troublemakers were intoxicated and were nuisances to people. Despite the problems, police said the positive part was no violence erupted as a result of the peoples’ intoxicated behaviour and they left the areas concerned when told to do so. Overall, police said it was good weekend with no serious crimes reported. The downside, they said, was that a few people continue to ignore road safety messages.
