Witnesses stopped a driver who was seen driving dangerously at the controlled single-lane roadway at bridge works in Avatiu on Saturday night after it had driven past a red light and towards another vehicle.

According to police, the witnesses removed the keys from the car.

The driver, and a passenger, were observed to be intoxicated. Police had to call in a translator, as the driver could not communicate in English.

He was subsequently arrested and remanded into prison after returning a breathalyser test reading of more than three and a half times the limit.

Looking at other reports, police media and strategic advisor Trevor Pitt says some drivers do not wait for the weekend. On Friday, Police arrested a driver after he crashed his motorbike on the main road at O'oa and he tested nearly four times the limit.

He appeared in Court on Saturday morning on two charges, including driving while disqualified, he was released on bail.
Police Investigators were also busy on Friday clearing recent burglaries. One man was arrested and remanded into custody on a charge of breaking into a shop. The 23 year old appeared in court on Saturday and no plea was taken, he was remanded into prison. Officers were also processing the four juvenile suspects in relation to recent burglaries.
