Rarotonga residents are being urged to prepare for the upcoming Tutaka, a biannual public health inspection initiative, aimed at ensuring clean and safe living environments.

The latest round of inspections will take place from Monday, April 24, to Friday, May 4, 2025.

The Tutaka programme, run by Te Marae Ora (TMO) Public Health, focuses on eliminating mosquito breeding sites and improving hygiene to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as dengue fever.

As in the past, Te Marae Ora health inspectors will be making rounds across the island, assessing properties for cleanliness and proper waste disposal.

Residents are encouraged to follow key steps to maintain a healthy environment, including:

• Eliminating mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water.
• Keeping pigs away from homes to prevent sanitation issues.
• Maintaining clean food preparation areas to avoid contamination.
• Clearing overgrown vegetation to reduce pest infestations.
• Ensuring homes are clean and hygienic through regular upkeep.
• Controlling unwanted pests such as insects and rodents.

By taking these precautions, communities can help reduce the risk of disease and promote overall public health, Te Marae Ora health ministry said.

The Tutaka programme has long been a preventive measure against mosquito-borne illnesses in the Cook Islands.

Conducted twice a year, it involves both community participation and official inspections.

While residents are expected to maintain their properties voluntarily, the new Public Health Bill will introduce monetary fines for those who fail to comply with cleanliness standards.
