Te Tuhi Kelly: Focus on the future of our villages
Te Tuhi Kelly.

Te Tuhi Kelly, Leader of the Progressive Party states there has been much sabre rattling going on with regards to people talking to him about getting rid of the Government.

The message to me has been, “We have to get them out at the next election, and we just have to, no matter what”.

I say to them, and then what, vote in the same old same old. My answer to these people is that we need to focus on the future of our villages, our communities, our islands, our country and it is through building, maintaining and sustaining a future for our children.

Instead, we are focusing on the politics, the political parties, the political leadership that's where our focus is.

The scandal, the scuttlebutt, the philandering, the poor decision making, debt and all manner of secretive deals internationally and closer to home domestically. The poor Government agency recruitment processes, that is where our focus has been for years post 1996. The more things change politically the more they have stayed the same.

Removing the current leadership isn’t enough if there’s no clear vision for what comes next. Simply swapping one group of politicians for another won’t address the deep-rooted issues that have held the country back. The focus, should be on building, maintaining, and sustaining a future for our children, and that vision should be far-reaching and all-encompassing.

It is a social and cultural awakening, it is about sacrifice, it is about facing our issues head on, and it’s about beneficial change rather than propping up a system creaking at the seams, judging by the discontent manifested by our people.

It’s about reshaping the fabric of our society by addressing the systemic issues that affect everyone—from housing, education, and health to justice, policing, employment, and security. These are the things that impact daily life and will create the foundation for a stable, thriving future.

This broad focus will resonate with so many people because it’s not about abstract politics—it’s about real-world outcomes that affect families and communities. By focusing on these issues, we’ll be able to tie this focus to tangible, practical results.

And when people see that the vision isn’t just about replacing one group of politicians with another but about creating a new system that prioritises our people, our well-being, and our future, this movement will gain unstoppable momentum.

This cascading vision touches on so many aspects of life—it’s about providing stability and opportunity across the board. The key now is to make sure that vision becomes crystal clear and something that everyone can rally behind.

Brown, the Opposition and their cohorts are just a blip in time, painful and unhealthy and as people rally around, the future is now in our hands, only if we change our ways going forward.

I truly believe that it is where our children's futures are concerned is the rallying point for our people. Because then it’s not just about politics but about leaving a legacy of fairness, opportunity, and sustainability, that can appeal to everyone—from young people who want a better future, to our parents and elders who want to see our island villages and communities thrive long after we've gone.

We all have stories of how the current system is failing or has failed the younger generation and this story telling can take on a life of its own, sparking more awareness, especially when people see the impact of today's choices on their children's education, health, livelihoods, and opportunities.

This focus on our children should be consistently framed around creating a better, more stable society for our children, and this will unite different factions of the community and help us to stay focused even when distractions or temptations arise, such as what is happening now.

We all want what’s best for our children and the recent court case of a convicted paedophile is a case in point. The system failed the children, the parents failed the children, and so the focus has to be a whole of life focus, from the cradle to the grave.

Whilst we have been distracted by the passport debacle, China agreement, To Tatou Vai, deep sea mining and other scandalous goings on, we have forgotten what is important. It's our kids, what future do they have, ignorant of all these goings on, but intimately involved and affected by the fallout from poor Government decision making and having their futures capped or curtailed.
