In many parts of the Pacific, including the Cook Islands, fear comes in different forms – fear of financial struggles, fear of failing relationships within families, fear of the unknown, or even fear of standing firm in our Christian faith.
But fear is not from God.
The Bible tells us: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
God calls us to trust Him instead of living in fear.
Today we will explore three ways in which fear impacts us and how we can overcome it through Christ.
Fear paralyses, but faith moves us forward
Fear can stop us from doing what God has called us to do. It makes us doubt our abilities, hesitate to take action, and even avoid situations where we could grow. When we focus on fear, we stay stuck. But faith in God gives us the courage to move forward.
Joshua 1:9 – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Psalm 56:3 – “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”
Imagine a fisherman afraid of rough seas. If he never launches his canoe, he will never catch any fish. In the same way, if we let fear control us, we will never experience the blessings that come from stepping out in faith.
Fear holds us back, but faith pushes us forward. Trusting God allows us to move past our fears and into His blessings.
Fear distorts the truth, but faith sees clearly
Fear makes problems seem bigger than they really are. It makes us forget God’s promises and leads us to believe lies – that we are alone, that we are not good enough, or that God won’t help us. But faith keeps our focus on God’s truth.
The Bible tells us: Isaiah 41:10 – “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Matthew 8:26 – “Jesus said, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”
A child afraid of the dark believes there is danger in the room, even when there isn’t. In the same way, fear can make us see dangers and problems that God has already taken care of. Faith helps us see clearly and trust in His power.
Fear distorts reality, but faith reminds us of God’s truth. When we trust in Him, we can see clearly and walk with confidence.
Fear weakens, but faith strengthens
Fear drains our energy and makes us feel powerless. It can cause stress, anxiety, and even affect our health. But faith strengthens us, gives us peace, and renews our spirit.
Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Psalm 27:1 – “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”
A coconut tree that faces strong winds grows deeper roots to stay strong. Likewise, when we face fear with faith, we grow stronger in our trust in God.
Fear weakens, but faith strengthens. When we trust in God, we find the peace and strength to overcome anything.
In summary, fear is a tool that Satan uses to keep us from experiencing God’s best. But as Christians, we do not have to live in fear.

Fear weakens, but faith strengthens.
Whenever fear tries to take over, remember: God is with you, and He is greater than anything you fear. Step forward in faith and experience the victory that is only found in Jesus.
