20 teams eyed for Team Tri challenge

Fifteen teams of three triathletes each have registered for the the Annual BSP and KPMG Team Tri Competition this Saturday, February 1, at the Tikioki Tri Site.

The competition will feature a short course of 200 metre swim, 8-kilometre bike and 2km run to be undertaken in teams of three, with each team completing the distance three times. 

Registration is at 1pm with the race starting at 2pm sharp. The registration fee for individual entries is $15.

Cook Islands Triathlon Association president Roland Neururer said they anticipate 20 teams competing in this weekend’s competition – the first open event of the year.

“We have 15 teams so far and we are expecting to hit our target of 20 teams this year. There will be some last-minute entries,” Neururer said yesterday.

Registration will close at 4pm today and late entries will be accepted up to race day however these will incur a $10 late fee.

Among the favourites in the individual discipline is Tri Hard, a team made up of Jacob Pynenburg,Andrew Menzies and Brooke Ross. Tri Hard won the one discipline title last year in 1:27:46 hours.

In the all-disciplines category, the Postrzygacz family – husband-and-wife duo Jakub and Adrianna and their children – will be the top contenders.

The Three P’s in a Squad won the all-disciplines category last year in 1:33:53 hours.

Neururer is also happy to assist people to make up a team, so if you fancy giving it a go but don’t yet have a team, feel free to call him on 55077.

“Sports teams, banks, government departments, families, church groups, businesses and a number of youngsters always line up to compete and have fun with their friends and families,” he said.

“The conditions are looking good, some overcast and little rain forecast but quite good conditions on the day.

Neururer also said they have received interest from new members, and anyone keen to try out triathlon can join them for a $25 annual fee.

The next big event in the Cook Islands Triathlon calendar is the Paradise Supplies Kids Triathlon on March 1 followed by the BSP Women’s Triathlon in mid-March.
