Letter: Gullible public, empty promises

Dear Editor, The Muri Night Market was chocker on Monday, with tourism booming.

And yet on Tuesday morning the front page of your newspaper reports on the generous initiative by one church to care for “vulnerable families” along with a story of locals unable to get police protection when armed intruders invaded property. How many years have our politicians promoted tourism growth that we “all can share in”?

Anyone foolish enough to think that the current feverish promotion of undersea mining of the ocean floor will create wealth that “we all can share in” must be both deaf and blind. The sad fact is that the creation of “wealth”, if and when that actually occurs, does not filter down to the hungry and needy, nor to the provision of acceptable public service such as police, health and education.

Why is the public so gullible? When will we wake up?

It is said that a population gets the politicians that it deserves. Well, we certainly have 24 that don’t care about the voters.
