Maine Etu Kura 2024/Miss Akatokamanava Pivai Ambushia Mateariki was crowned the first runner up in the Maine Kuki Airani Aotearoa beauty pageant held over a month ago in Auckland, New Zealand.

Last Tuesday, she was welcomed home in Akatokamanava (Mauke) by the amazing community, including her close relatives.

The Maine Kuki Airani Aotearoa beauty pageant held in late November 2024 saw seven talented contestants and was won by Maine Araura, Ngatepaeru Marie Maoate.

Miss Akatokamanava’s achievements were best pareu wear, the head chaperone’s special award, best talent category, best muumuu wear and first runner up overall.

Mateariki, the 24-year-old, young and talented Cook Islander, grew up on the beautiful islands of Akatokamanava. She left Cook Islands for New Zealand two years ago to begin her independent life.

“The moment I stepped off the plane and onto the soil of my homeland, Akatokamanava, I was overwhelmed with love and gratitude. The warm embrace of my people at the airport was more than a welcome, it was a celebration of our shared pride and connection. The sight of familiar faces, the sound of our language, the rhythm of drums, and the fragrant scent of maire leis stirred something deep within me,” Mateariki said of her reception last week.

She shared that she “felt an unbreakable bond” with the local residents of Akatokamanava, who have stood by her since the very beginning of her journey as their Maine Akatokamanava in New Zealand.

The unwavering support reminded her of the strength and unity that defines our community.

“My heart swelled with joy as I was wrapped in their love, knowing that I carry their hopes and dreams with me wherever I go.”

Mateariki shared that she experienced a challenging time throughout the pageant, as her family members were back in the islands for the majority of the time.

Thankfully, social media has been a significant source of help for her, enabling important phone calls to families during decision-making processes or in times of need.

She is happy to finally return back to Akatokamanava this festive season and spend New Year’s with her people who have been of great support.

Mateariki thanked the families in Mauke for making her arrival home a special and memorable occasion.

“Being welcomed home in this way is a feeling I will treasure forever; one of pride, humility, and deep connection to the roots that ground me.”
