The Cook Islands Rugby Union (CIRU) is hosting the ‘She’s A Ruckstar’ Christmas beach rugby fun festival for girls to provide a safe and fun learning space to start their rugby journey in a less intimidating environment.

To create a fun, festive, and inclusive environment where players of all skill levels can enjoy rugby, participation is not restricted to girls only – boys are welcome to join in and enjoy the experience as well.

The She’s a Ruckstar festival will be held this coming Saturday, December 21, from 1pm – 3.30pm at the Nikao Beach Courts opposite the Social Centre.

Parents are encouraged to take their girls (five to 13 years) along for an afternoon of beach tag rugby, games and Christmas cheer.

Cook Islands Rugby Union vice president Harriet Tuara has played a key role in developing programmes like She’s a Ruckstar and the Healthy Living Programme, which is taught in schools in Rarotonga and across the southern group islands.

These programmes are designed to ensure that rugby remains accessible to all, regardless of gender or background.

Tuara promotes grassroots development, getting girls involved in rugby at an early age, and investing in coaching and facilities specifically for women.

“After a successful year of hosting our monthly She’s a Ruckstar festivals, we want to finish the year on a high note with a festive beach rugby event,” Tuara said.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate our rugby community, reflect on the year’s achievements, and enjoy the game in a relaxed, holiday-themed setting. The focus is on having fun, fostering teamwork, and building lasting memories with friends and family while embracing the joy of rugby.”

Tuara encourages children to dress in their best Christmas colours, join in the activities and challenges, enjoy free sausage sizzle, ice cream and spot prizes.

“Don’t miss this chance for your girls to have fun, make new friends, and experience the joy of rugby this festive season,” Tuara said.

Her work also aims to ensure that pathways for both girls and boys in rugby are sustainable and visible.

“Rugby doesn’t discriminate – it welcomes everyone,” Tuara said.

After a long rugby union season, Tuara said they are in a period of reflection and strategic planning for 2025 – which promises to be a busy and exciting year.

School students can expect more She’s a Ruckstar festivals and other rugby events in the new year.
