Rarotonga 7s defending champions Tupapa Panthers, are gearing up for today’s kick off with high expectations and a history of strong performance.

Tupapa Panthers had retained the Raro Rugby 7s men’s title last year while Sydney’s Burraneer Rays were crowned the women’s champions.

The Panthers took on Manatoa – made up of Rarotonga-based national players – in the men’s final 2023.

Today, the Raro 7s competition's men's teams include Panthers, Veilomani (CK-Fijians), Eels, TKV Reds and the returning Tabusoro Cook Islands-Fijian residents.

And the women’s teams are Panthers, North Shores A and B and Eels.

Tuapap Panthers head Coach Daren Piri says this year’s preparation has been ongoing, with momentum boosted by players returning from the Papeete Sevens in Tahiti.

Piri said the training sessions have been well-attended, and the team has been strengthened by athletes eager to don the Tupapa jersey today.

He said the squad will see some fresh faces this year, where there are expected to be some new players.

Challenges, as always, accompany preparation for any major tournament, however, Piri is confident that the team’s obstacles are manageable.

“No unusual issues, just the norm – players with work and family commitments,” he remarked, emphasising that balancing commitments is a familiar part of local rugby life.

The Panthers’ goals remain resolute, he says: "Like any team that joins a comp, the aim is to win.”

Piri said the focus is not solely on the outcome and they are motivated by the drive to outdo themselves with each game.

“It is always to improve and to perform better than previous games as an individual player and as a team,” he added, highlighting the relentless pursuit of growth and excellence that defines the Panthers’ spirit.

Reflecting on lessons learned from past successes, Piri emphasised the importance of fundamentals.

“Drilling into players the fundamentals of 7s rugby” is a key takeaway from their championship win last year, forming the backbone of their strategy for 2024.

All eyes will be on the Panthers today as they will showcase their talent and uphold their reputation as champions.
