The brilliant display of fireworks celebrated the closing ceremony of the third Cook Islands Games after two weeks of absolutely enjoyable, intense and competitive sport events.

Over 4000 athletes representing the 11 islands of Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia, Manihiki, Mauke, Mitiaro, Palmerston, Pukapuka, Rakahanga, Rarotonga, and Tongareva came together, united in sports competing in 25 sports codes.

On Saturday, the teams gathered at the National Stadium for the fun packed closing ceremony.

CC Tamure leaders Mona Taio and Uirangi Bishop led the fantastic performances by the female dancers, with Makea Pauka and his drummers as well as amazing fire dances putting on a thrilling show.

The next Cook Islands Games will be held in 2026.

Romani Katoa, acting president of Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee (CISNOC), welcomed the “esteemed athletes, officials, honoured guests, and fellow citizens” to the closing event.

In his address Katoa said, “I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. This celebration has brought together over 6000 athletes and officials, each representing the best of their island, showcasing not only incredible talent but also the heart and spirit of our nation.”

He said the past few weeks have shown the unity of the country and islands, expressed through the fierce competitive spirit and sportsmanship.

“Each event has been a display of dedication, skill, and resilience – a true reflection of the pride we all share in representing our islands,” Katoa said.

“The Cook Islands Games continue to grow and flourish, and it is evident that our commitment to nurturing athletic talent and promoting the values of camaraderie and respect is unwavering.

“I am continually reminded of the passion and effort that each of you brings to this arena, proving that together we can achieve great things.”

Katoa expressed his gratitude to the sponsors and national federations for their support in making these Games a success, for nurturing the athletes and investing in the future of sports in the Cook Islands.

“To our islands, thank you for your overwhelming support. This pride and enthusiasm fuels each of us as we compete as athletes, reminding us of the importance of togetherness in our journey toward excellence,” added Katoa.

He also acknowledged the hard work and dedication by the CISNOC team, and gratitude to Olympic Solidarity and the Oceania National Olympic Committees.

Katoa said the nation now looked forward with excitement and anticipation to the next Cook Islands Games, “where once again, we will come together as one proud nation”.

“Atawai wolo e Kia Orana.”
