Pukapuka/Nassau and Rarotonga win tennis masters doubles gold

The Cook Islands Games tennis masters men’s and women’s doubles events were completed on Tuesday with some superb play from both divisions.

Although the finals were played on Tuesday, the medal ceremony for both events will be held today at the National Tennis Centre.

In the men’s masters doubles, Patiiamai Ataela and Kirianu Nio of Pukapuka/Nassau defeated their teammates Ripanau Tauia and Clerk Turua 9-3 to win the gold medal.

Reverend Tuakeu Daniel and Tuaine Papatua of Mangaia defeated Manihiki’s Adrian Hopwood and Ariana Matangaro 9-3 to claim the bronze medal.

In the women’s masters doubles, Rarotonga’s Selina Napa and Nadine Newnham claimed the gold medal after beating Nancy Kora and Christine Newnham of Manihiki 9-8 (and 7/4 in the tiebreaker).

Manihiki’s Mami Nikoro and Lawrencia William defeated Mangaia’s Nora Lazaro and Julia Kapi 9-2 to win the bronze medal.

The tennis competition concludes today followed by the medal presentations.

Handball, table tennis, sailing, darts and lawn balls continued yesterday with golf and athletics holding their first day of competition.
